The 411 on Greens Powders

Sporty & Rich Wellness - The 411 on Greens Powders

By: @drmelissa_co

I am frequently asked about greens powders in my practice. Greens powders are best used to supplement a healthy diet and can assist in improving energy and feelings of overall well-being. They can also be used to supplement a diet devoid of the necessary fruits, vegetables and fibres needed, but I do not recommend this. What you eat (or are not eating) is the first pillar to address when seeking optimal health, and no greens powder or supplement will absolve you of a poor diet, especially in the long-term.

That being said, greens powders are something I recommend in my practice often and they can be a great way to support general health alongside the right diet and lifestyle. Here are some considerations when selecting a greens powder:

Opt for organic: Read all ingredients and select a powder with ingredients that are largely organic. Select a non-GMO where possible.

Trial-size first: Not all greens powders will suit everyone. For example, many powders contain probiotics and fibres like inulin or different types of bran. These may be excellent for someone who has a healthy gut, but may aggravate someone with a gut imbalance like small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Another example is that certain powders also contain different types of protein that may cause bloating in some individuals.

Do not expect to be healed of all of your symptoms: As mentioned above, a greens powder is meant to help support general health. Health is multifactorial and must be supported in a variety of different ways including diet, sleep, hydration, stress management, regular movement, the right supplements for you, and so on. A greens powder can be a good place to start, but is not the end of the road.

They do not work overnight: While some people will feel a benefit relatively quickly, others may not. It is important to be consistent with any remedy before you expect to see any benefits. If you choose to try a greens powder, do it for one month before you adjudicate its benefits. Note: if you have any symptoms you believe are being caused or aggravated by the powder, stop immediately.

Be cautious with other supplements, medications, and underlying health conditions: Even though a greens powder may be “natural”, it does not mean there is no potential for interactions or risks. Always speak to your medical or naturopathic doctor for guidance.

As always, if you are experiencing symptoms, it is best to speak with a doctor to identify any underlying conditions before self-supplementing. Although natural remedies can be extremely beneficial, they are not risk free and cannot necessarily replace other forms of medical care.

Inflammation in itself isn't a bad thing....

To some, avoiding junk food is considered restrictive; to others, a restrictive diet may be as extreme as consuming food from only one food group or strictly avoiding others. Regardless, the ultimate question is, when do restrictive diets help and when do they harm?
