The Benefits of LED Light Therapy

ย

ย

By: @drmelissa_co

ย

LED light therapy is a wonderful tool to support healing of the skin cells and stimulate collagen production, both of which are foundational for smooth, healthy skin. It can assist with clearing acne, fading pigmentation and softening fine lines and wrinkles. Beyond skincare, this incredible technology has many other applications including promoting circulation, alleviating muscle and joint stiffness, and ameliorating aches and pains. Emerging research also suggests it may be helpful in stimulating hair (re)growth.ย

ย

The proper term for this technology is low-level light therapy using LED (light emitting diode). This technology was developed by NASA to help astronauts stay well in space. The energy delivered by the LED to the cells is what provides the therapeutic benefit, similar to photosynthesis in plants. It is very safe and low risk when used as indicated. It does not cause cellular DNA damage like UV light.ย

ย

Low level light therapy with LED is suitable for all skin types. For the greatest benefit, sessions should be a minimum of 20 minutes and maximum of 30 minutes, and the light should be as close to the treatment area as possible. This allows the tissues to absorb enough of the light energy to begin to heal. The skin should be freshly cleansed and free of makeup or sunscreen, both of which deflect the light instead of allowing the skin to absorb. It requires no downtime and is non-invasive. Immediately after using, normal skincare and daily activities can be resumed.ย

ย

One of my favourite ways to harness this technology to promote healthy skin and delay the signs of ageing, resolve breakouts, and provide the skin with an amazing glow is to use it in conjunction with cosmetic acupuncture over the face. Cosmetic acupuncture can also be effective at stimulating collagen production, while relaxing and toning underlying musculature, softening fine lines and wrinkles, supporting circulation, and, along with acupuncture of the body, can begin to balance the system internally โ€” which ultimately promotes healthier skin. I also love utilising this combination for hair regrowth, to help heal tissues following surgery, for musculoskeletal injuries and arthritis, and for women experiencing menstrual concerns (eg. cramping or endometriosis)..ย

ย

As always, speak to a licensed health care provider about this type of treatment before using it. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid using LED light over the abdomen and breast tissue. Lastly, do you research, not all devices are created equal. I recommend only selecting devices that are backed by clinical research.ย
