Breaking Our Food Habits

Many of us are creatures of habit. That is beautiful, but maybe not the best when it comes to food and what we eat. In my nutrition practice, I always urge my clients to go out of their way to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. For example, seaweed, or kohlrabi or micro greens are things we can find at any grocery store or farmers market, but tend to shy away from. These are the exact things we should lean into. I believe it is important to try new things and switch around your food routine in order to supplement your body with a variety of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Why take a lab made multivitamin when you can eat your vitamins through delicious, freshly grown foods? The key is to stay curious, adventurous and open minded. If you need to take a supplement for medical reasons, fine, but I truly believe nature gave us all we need. 


I make the analogy with my clients to view their body as if it had a long check list with different boxes on it. Each one represents different vitamins and minerals and nutrients it needs to function at peak. If you eat the same oatmeal bowl for breakfast and the same salad for lunch everyday, you keep checking the same boxes over and over again. This sets you up to miss out on the opportunity to feel a different kind of healthy, to feel more and more vital. But you won’t know what this feels like if you keep the same foods in your rotation all the time.
